In March, 2023, I’ve joined Wargaming to work as a narrative designer on an unannounced project — fellow gamedevs, this feels familiar, right? Finally, almost 2 years later, I can share with the world what I’ve been working for:
The first open playtest of Project CW (working title) is open! Join our hero-based multiplayer vehicle combat game and play 24/7 till March, 2nd!
On PC, activate the code CWALPHA2 in Wargaming Game Center.
On consoles, join here: https://projectcw.dev
Ok, but what’s this hero-based… vehicle… shooter?
With Wargaming doing what they do best (tanks), we’re making a game that combines the features of vehicle combat and hero shooter. This isn’t World of Tanks 2.0 — it’s a more fast-paced, arcade arena game where tanks are commandeered by Agents with unique abilities — members of [REDACTED], an international rapid-response tank unit assembled to prevent [REDACTED].
If you felt like WoT was too slow for you, but hero shooters are too fast, this might be your game. I personally love it just because I don’t die in the first 20 seconds, like in an average hero shooter, and I have enough time to think over my tactics.
The game is set in alternative 1960s-80s, where the humanity’s main enemy is not the political divide, but the skyrocketing technology (sounds familiar? yes, we’re counting on it). Still, it’s not sci-fi (or, god forbid, retrofuturism), but rather the speculative realism where every gadget, no matter how fantastic it might see, is based on real research, prototypes, or experiments.
Narrative-wise, this Alpha test is intended just as the first taste of the story: you meet the Agents, explore the maps, get a glimpse of the rivalling Factions. I was a one-person narrative department until my long-time writing partner Anton has joined me early this year, and now we’re scheming some good stuff for you! Designing the narrative for non-narrative-driven game has always been a challenge, and my personal goal is to tell a story that develops in-game, not just in intro cinematics of between-battle comics.
Now go play and let me know what you think! In the next issue of Unevenly, I’ll tell more facts about the game and our work, so if you have questions, ask away!
